Open-weight AI models: what they are and what they cost to run
Open-weight AI models are files you can download and run on hardware you own, which means no vendor sees your data at all. A year ago they weren't good enough to bother with. On independent benchmarks they're now close to the leading proprietary models on everyday work, though still behind on more complex tasks. The catch is the hardware bill: the frontier-class ones need a data-centre deployment, not a server in the back office.
